MEETING THE CHALLENGE: We're Getting Close! In December 1999, the Maine Humanities Council was awarded a $250,000 challenge grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities contingent upon our raising $750,000 in private contributions. The minimum goal of $1 million is for the purchase, renovation, and maintenance of our new home at 674 Brighton Avenue in Portland and for the nucleus of an endowment for our programs. We have met our first two challenge grant deadlines, thanks to the help of the generous contributors listed below. The Council must still raise another $157,000. If you would like to know more about this opportunity to secure the future of the public humanities in Maine, please contact Dorothy Schwartz, the Council's executive director, at (207)773-5051.
