VIEWS OF THE EAST 2004China, Japan & Korea in Maine Schools May 14-15 and June 20-23 The interdisciplinary program that has revolutionized the teaching of East Asia in Maine schools is being offered for a fifth year. Open to any Maine teacher, grades 5-12, or school media specialist. Visit here for more information and to apply. Limited to 20. Co-sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council and the World Affairs Council of Maine, under a grant from the Freeman Foundation to the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia, administered by the Five College Center for East Asian Studies. For 30 hours of intensive study, participants receive a $300 stipend,
$200 in books for their own use, and another $300 in materials for their
school libraries. Threatened
and Endangered is a traveling exhibition of artist's books on
endangered plants and animals by Rebecca Goodale, supported by an Arts &
Humanities grant to the Maine Women Writer's Collection. Goodale's black
racer snake is shown here in its "flat" state (right) and assembled
(below). The exhibit will appear at the Jack S. Ketchum Library, University
of New England, Biddeford, in April and May, Camden Public Library in July,
and Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, from September
through December.
