Maine
It is a state known to residents and visitors alike for its extraordinary natural beauty. Maine is also a state of rich cultural resources. The Maine Humanities Council, through grants and programs, works to strengthen and expand those resources that add so much to the texture and meaning of our lives. We reached over 200 communities and many thousands of Mainers in 2004, offering the power and pleasure of ideas to people in every corner of the state.
Founded in 1976, the Council operates out of an office in Portland, Maine, offering programs statewide to a diverse audience. The Council uses the humanities to provide cultural enrichment for all Mainers and as a tool for social change, bringing people together in conversation that crosses social, economic and cultural barriers.
