A magic hat flies into town and changes adults into different types of animals. The townspeople are puzzled, until a giant wizard shows up and changes them back. When the wizard slips off and puts his magic hat back on, he changes into a small child.

A rabbit who has splendid powers is, nevertheless, lonely and tries to create a companion using magic. Large pages make for striking pictures of his tricks and the animals he conjures up.

The current Children’s Poet Laureate’s collection of 17 poems about mystical characters is intended for elementary-schoolers, but the rhyme and rhythm are so catchy that they might appeal to any age. Illustrations use a subdued palette and are framed with a gold border, as though hung in a portrait gallery.

When three owls wake in the middle of the night to find their mother has gone, they begin to fret. The three work together to make each other feel safe, and realize when their mother returns that they are nocturnal. Maybe one of them will grow up to serve as a messenger at Hogwarts!
