- Grandfather’s Trolley by Bruce McMillan. (1995) Ages 2-6
In this photographic book, a grandfather conducts a trolley for children to ride. The photographs were taken at the Kennebunk Trolley Museum, and children who visit can ride the same trolley.
- Grandma’s Purple Flowers by Adjoa J. Burrowes. (2000) Ages 4-8
After her grandmother dies, a child spends the winter months mourning-but spring brings the purple flowers that Grandma loved, and in them, the child finds joy again.
- Grandpa Loved by Josephine Nobisso, illus. by Maureen Hyde. (1989) Ages 4-8
The grandfather in this book helps his grandson enjoy and appreciate the world around him. When he dies, the boy knows he lives on in the places they enjoyed together.
- Little Mamá Forgets by Robin Cruise, illus. by Stacey Dressen-McQueen. (2006) Ages 4-8
In this family story set in East Los Angeles, Lucy’s grandmother is losing her memory, but she can still tell wonderful stories about Mexico, and she never forgets to show her love for Lucy.
- Lots of Grandparents by Shelley Rotner and Sheila Kelly, Ed.D. (2001) Ages 2 and up
This multicultural book contains the words for “grandmother” and “grandfather” in many languages, and contains photographs of many different grandparents.
- My Grandfather's House by Bruce Coville, illus. by Henri Sorensen. (1996) Ages 4-8
When Grandfather dies, his grandson has many questions. Some are answered by his parents, but others are not resolved until the boy visits the funeral home.
- Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs by Tomie dePaola. (1973) Ages 4-8
This story about a young boy’s love for his grandmother contains rich detail about their days together. His sadness when she dies is softened by a falling star: a kiss from her.
- Old Bob’s Brown Bear by Niki Daly. (2001) Ages 3-8
Old Bob never had a teddy bear, so Gran gives him one for his birthday. His granddaughter Emma thinks she can love the bear more. Who is right? Who should keep the bear?
- Where Is Grandpa? by T.A. Barron, illus. by Chris Soentpiet. (2000) Ages 3-8
Like the boy in Grandpa Loved, the child in this story finds memories of his grandfather in all the special places they shared. This book is set in the West, amidst spectacular mountain views.
