    Early one spring, a duck arrives at her pond and finds it still frozen—but not for long. Spring comes with patience and positive thinking. Words are repeated throughout, just like in the title.
  • Goldfish and Chrysanthemums by Andrea Cheng, illus. by Michelle Chang. (2003) Ages 4-8
    To help remind her grandmother of her home in China, a Chinese-American girl reconstructs the flower-lined goldfish pond she had there.
  • In the Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming. (1993) Ages 2-6
    Rhyming text presents an Asian-American toddler’s view of pond creatures through the seasons.
  • The Pig in the Pond by Martin Waddell, illus. by Jill Barton. (1992) Ages 4-8
    Neligan’s pig starts a trend on a hot farm day by diving into the pond.
  • Pond Goose by Caroline Jayne Church. (2004) Ages 2-6
    Pond Goose’s muddy feathers make him a laughing-stock at the farm, until the day his difference saves him from peril and the other geese try to imitate it.
  • Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems by Joyce Sidman, illus. by Beckie Prange. (2005) Ages 5-12
    This Caldecott Honor book is a collection of eleven poems about pond flora and fauna, accompanied by scientific explanations and illustrated with beautiful woodcuts.
  • Splash! by Ann Jonas. (1995) Ages 2-5
    A little girl asks “how many are in my pond?” as creatures splash in and out of her backyard pond. There are no numerals in the illustrations, yet the story lends itself to counting activities.
  • Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond by Cathryn Falwell. (2001) Ages 3-7
    As they are startled by nearby creatures, the number of turtles on a log in a pond decreases from ten to one. Collage illustrations by the Maine artist.
  • Turtle’s Race With Beaver by Joseph & Jesse Bruchac, illus. by José Aruego & Ariane Dewey. (2003) Ages 4-8
    This retelling of a Seneca Indian tale shows Turtle outsmarting Beaver, who has taken over her pond. Pair this book with a telling of “The Tortoise and the Hare.”
