Volunteer Reader Training

Everywhere Babies back

Born to Read offers volunteer readers two early literacy training sessions per year. Volunteers attend regular Born to Read trainings and visit one or more child care programs on a weekly basis. They read aloud to children, bring in books from the library, and help generate reading-related activities such as writing, storytelling or book-making projects, dramatic play, puppetry, and singing. Some volunteer readers will, in turn, provide training and technical assistance to other volunteers.

Volunteer readers receive a starter set of books for their read-aloud visits; child care providers receive four new, high-quality hardcover books for their libraries; and children receive one new, high-quality book to bring home to share with their families. The Maine Office of Child Care and Head Start contributes to the funding for these books.
