2005 BORN TO READ Conference — Workshops

Ellie Libby connects music and literacy. Gail Curtis and Jeanne-Marie Frost find "the magical way to literacy"! Nancy Salmon demonstrates how movement relates to literacy. Participants in the "Moved to Read" workshop use their bodies to form letters. Kathleen Sullivan reads aloud from Grace Lin's The Ugly Vegetable. Phyllis Fuchs has the enthusiasm it takes to keep babies and toddlers busy! Mary Partridge links literacy with Maine's Early Learning Results.

The following workshops were held during the morning session:

I had a wonderful time. I would have like to attend all workshops, or at least three.

Children as Storytellers, presented by Kellie Irving, , M.Ed., Lead Teacher at East End Children's Workshop.

Culturally Responsive Environments for Young Children, presented by Kathleen Sullivan, Head of PROP Children's Services.

New & Recommended Titles in Children's Books, presented by Vicky Smith, Director and Children's Librarian at McArthur Library, Biddeford.

How a Children's Book is Made, presented by Lisa Jahn-Clough, Maine-based author and illustrator.

A,B,C, and Do, Re, Mi: The Magical Way to Literacy, presented by Ellie Libby, M.Ed., Research Associate at the Center for Community Inclusion.

Creating an Early Literacy Environment for Children, presented by Maureen Hickey, M.S., and Deb Chase, M.S.

Moved to Read, presented by Nancy Salmon, M.F.A., Owner of Dance Resources, LLC.

Linking Literacy with Maine's Early Learning Results, presented by Mary Partridge and Deborah King, Co-Directors of A Child's World Preschool & Care Center, Windham.

Time for Twos, and Babies Too, presented by Phyllis Fuchs, former children's librarian, Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick.

To meet learning results, literacy needs to be in all rooms of the preschool environment. It is easier to do this than I thought. I came away with several specific ideas to use in my own program.
Great workshop! Lively, fun, filled with songs and more I can use at my preschool!
